CHAPTER FOURTEEN
The weather bureau had forecasted for the hottest day of the year, and as my recent luck would have it, Coach Greggs had demanded that I sit alongside the team on the sidelines for the duration of the game.
It was just after lunchtime on a Saturday, and I travelled in the car with Dad and Logan enroute to the stadium. Silence gripped the car ride the entire way, Dad breaking the peaceful drive with a honk of the horn every now and then, abusing the latest âmoron driverâ that cut him off. The traffic built up even more as we approached The Viper Pit, almost stopping to a crawl just outside of the playerâs entrance where, as a parent of one of the players, Dad was permitted to park.
Daytime matches at The Viper Pit didnât have the same glitz and glamor that I had witnessed at last Fridayâs match. Ashleigh had enjoyed herself so much at the last game that she had gone ahead and purchased the exact same seat to watch todayâs battle. Despite my deflating news that I would be needed down on the field, I still had to inflict yet more misery on her when I told her about the schedule for todayâs game.
Today would be very different to the show she witnessed last week.
Forget the pyrotechnics.
Forget the flashy neon lights sparkling against the backdrop of the night sky.
Today was all about football. This was a game for the purists. Football lovers, like my father, lived for days like these.
âAh⦠you can smell it. Itâs in the air today⦠This...â Dad drew in a deep breath, his voice fading off into the distance. âThis is how it should be,â Dad said, his face a beaming smile for what felt like the first time in weeks.
He bid me farewell to find his seat in the main grandstand, and I followed behind Logan towards the playerâs entrance. The car ride to the stadium had been a long one. Logan remained in a foul mood, barely even grunting a response to Dad whenever he shot a question about the gameplan to him.
Logan turned off in to the changerooms without so much as a goodbye. I wasnât surprised. I grabbed the stadium pass that Coach Greggs had sorted out for me and held it out to the security guards. They nodded their approval, allowing me to walk by down the tunnel towards the green pasture of the football field.
I nestled in on the bench seat of the home team, pulling out my laptop and firing it up. I tapped away at the screen, preparing myself for notetaking. Some of the other Viper staff were busy filling drink bottles and checking medical supplies around me.
Shielding my eyes from the blaring sun, I took in the grandstands which were filling up quickly. The game was due to start in half an hour and the chants of âVi-Pers!â could be heard buzzing around the stadium. I readied myself for the start, giving my own little pep talk in the comfort of my own mind.
